I just finished One Day, by David Nicholls. The first fiction novel I read through in at least a decade and half.
The book is perhaps not life-altering or worthy of the many five star reviews it’s been awarded, but a good read. A very good, and touching, read.
The story flowed briskly (amazing feat considering it takes place over 20 years) and certain parts were so good… let’s just say, in Bill Simmon’s words, ” the room got mighty dusty”.
The title of the book has multiple meanings. One Day, as in the one day the two leads spent together before going off on their own lives. One Day, as in a look into one day of their life each year for twenty years. One day, as in hope “maybe one day…”.
As I mentioned earlier, the words “one day” is also a key part of one of the best openings to a feature I’ve ever read–“He can imagine, he says, playing for Cleveland again one day”, in that GQ article.
Oh and speaking of One Day, here’s an unrelated song, off the NBA 2k10 soundtrack.
And a movie adaptation is being made with Anne Hathaway and the dude from Across the Universe.
And in an attempt to make this entry more manly, here’s a sick Kanye track.
